Jazz singer and pianist Nina Simone became a prominent figure in the 1960s civil rights movement. Using her music as her tool for powerful protest, her songs became anthems for the national movement for reacial equality and justice.
Join us in exploriing Nina Simone and The Movement with author-poet Shonda Buchanan and singer-songwriter-musician Nailah Porter in this dual workshop. Inspired by her forthcoming book, "The Lost Songs of Nina Simone," Buchanan will lead a civil rights poetry workshop FOR ADULTS to create poems of activism and resistance. Porter will lead a musical workshop FOR KIDS to create and perform a song honoring those who marched for civil rights. Writing supplies and a range of instruments will be provided-but feel free to bring your own! Registration requested.
This event, " A Day In Nature", is a culmination of LA County Department of Parks & Recreation's Black Heritage Month celebration. Throughout the day enjoy food, crafts, and natural products from Black-owned vendors, nature center presentations, arts and culture workshops, a drumming circle, and more.
